Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl

I enjoyed Fangirl but not as much as Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park. I connected with Cath and her college experience but not so much with the Simon Snow story line. In fact, I found myself drifting off whenever Simon was mentioned. (I listened to the audio book).  However, Cath’s experience kept me listening because it was so unique. First off, her given name is “Cather” and her twin’s name is “Wren.” Secondly, Cath is not the typical college girl- she doesn’t party, she doesn’t worry about being popular, she’s responsible…And I love the fact that Cath is awkward, (she describes herself as“Underneath this veneer of slightly crazy and mildly socially retarded, I’m a complete disaster”) smart, and a writer. And her relationship with her boyfriend is refreshing and sweet.  “I miss you,” he said. “That’s stupid,” she said. “I saw you this morning.” “It’s not the time,” he said, and she could hear that he was smiling. “It’s the distance.”
