Parenting In A Social Media World by Charlene C. Giannetti

As a middle school counselor I know firsthand how easy it is for young adults to wreck havoc on others as well as on themselves when using social media. When upset, students often post nasty messages that they’d never say over the phone or in person. They often regret doing so but once it’s posted online or sent via text message, it’s too late. I’m actually glad that I was born before the social media boom because I’m certain that I would have gotten myself into trouble, considering what an impulsive teenager I was, and many parents agree with me. However, as Giannetti points out, “your child is living in a social media world and, like it or not, so are you.” Fortunately, rather than taking your child’s smart phone until their high school graduation and/or watching them like a hawk every time they utilize the internet, Giannetti offers reasonable tips for parents. “Parenting In A Social Media World” explores the negative impact of the social media world but also the positive, teachable moments of social media. I would recommend this book to parents, teachers, counselors, and anyone else who interacts with children.
