She was kidnapped not once but twice and now someone wants her dead because of it…
Her life was a lie!
Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.
Everyone seems to have a story… but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.
But can she do it in time…
Excerpt from Captured Lies:
Bailey moved closer to the open door.
“Did you tell her?”
“No.” Something was mumbled she couldn’t make out, then, “…let me worry about that.”
“What’s happening?”
“Donna Saunders aka Donna Zajic, married to Doug Zajic, a Member of Parliament. Donna disappeared in July of 1983. There was suspected abuse. Several calls, no charges. She was never seen again after the early morning of July 6, 1983. There was even question of him murdering her. Since no body, no blood, no sign of foul play, they had to drop it. The car she took when she left was finally recovered in southeast Calgary. Apparently she gave it to some guy at the airport and paid him to park it miles away. No sign of her buying a ticket though, to fly anywhere. I think that’s where Mr. Lund comes in. I’m guessing he’s responsible for getting her a new name. I’m just not clear why. Nor do I understand this next part.” There was silence except for the clacking of the computer keys. “It seems our Mr. Lund was playing a bit of a nasty game. He was getting twenty thousand dollars for territory fees – don’t know what that means – and another twelve thousand for cabin fees from Mr. Zajic and was paying Donna eight thousand dollars. So he pocketed at least twenty-eight thousand dollars a month for himself. Not clear on whether it was agreed upon or what. I’m guessing it was blackmail. The man was a pro. The list of people he was being paid by for some crazy things – everyone from police officers, to lawyers, to judges, to members of parliament. Nasty man. He had to be responsible for Donna’s name change. I just don’t get why.”
“There’s no way in hell my mom was getting eight thousand dollars a month. We lived like rats in the sewer most of the time.”

Maggie, Keep Calm and Answer These 16 Questions

  1. Do you consider yourself a logophile? If so, have you always been? I think I’ve always loved words. Even as a young child, I’d not only read them but cut them out of books – let me tell you that didn’t go over well.
  2. What is your favorite color? Teal is for sure my favorite color.
  3. Where were you born? Where did you grow up? I was born in Southern Alberta which is also where I grew up. I lived on a farm outside a small town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. A great place to grow up.
  4. Who is your favorite author? Only one? I think my all time favorite is Robert Ludlum but Sandra Brown would be a close second. Not only do I love to read their stories but I learned a lot from both of them.
  5. What is your favorite book? Thomas Covenant, The White Gold Wielder series – it’s a fantasy series I read several years ago but it has stayed with me.
  6. What do you do when you are not writing? I love to read, hike, spend time with my family, play games, take my dog for a walk, kayak. To be honest I do almost anything just so I can avoid doing housework.
  7. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors? Follow your heart. Write what you love but do take courses, join a writer’s group and/or a critique group. Learn from others, read a lot. Read books similar to those you like to write. Read other types of books that have the elements that you want to include in your story. Talk to other writers and authors and see what they’ve done to get where they are. And of course write. Write and write and write. And then rewrite and rewrite and rewrite.
  8. Is being a writer a curse or a gift? I am so grateful everyday that I am a writer. I love to be able to create stories, characters, settings and send people on a journey of discovery into my world.
  9. Do you prefer silence or some noise while you write? Actually I like there to be some noise. I usually listen to music or the radio while I write. It makes good company as it doesn’t need my attention. J
  10. If your book is made into a movie, which actors/actresses do you envision playing the parts? I would so love that and I truly believe that it would make a cool movie. To play Bailey, I think that Amanda Seigfried would be awesome in that role. To play Guy, I think that Channing Tatum would do nicely.
  11. How do you market your book? What avenues work best? I have done book tours, radio interviews, newspaper interviews, social media, press releases, public talks… I think all contribute to my overall success. It’s really hard to say which is better.
  12. What has been the best compliment? I have been very fortunate to have several but one that stood out about Captured Lies was this one:

“…Like an onion, each layer of this action-packed tale becomes more involved, more wickedly deceitful and more dangerous. Maggie Thom has done a remarkable job bringing the characters to life, and creating scenes that will have your heart racing while you are glued to each and every page! Mixed with a little humor, a little romance and the steel will of a wealthy family matriarch, Captured Lies is a MUST read from a gifted author!”  Tome Tender

13. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? It’s purely imagination as far as the story goes but there are situations that reflect real things I’ve gone through.

14. How did you come up with the title? I love coming up with titles. I usually give a story a title while I’m writing, just so I don’t get hung up on that. So initially Captured Lies was called Life of Another – a rather bland title. So I started writing out words that I felt fit the story, I also asked my beta readers for words. Then I started playing with them and out came Captured Lies.

15. Will there be a sequel? There is a sequel – Deceitful Truths. It was just published in March 2014.

Short Synopsis:

Tarin has lost a week of her life. She doesn’t know why and she doesn’t know who but she does know the result of it. Panicked she marries Stephen, leaping from one nightmare into another. Finally realizing she can’t put up with it anymore and she needs to get answers to those missing seven days. With only two clues, one a code and the other a single piece of paper that has a logo on it. To find answers she will have to gain people’s trust only to use it to her advantage. She swore she’d never be like her father yet she finds herself using his ruthless tactics to save her future and that of her son.

16. What project are you working on now? I have two novels on the go right now – Deadly Ties and Split Seconds.

Deadly Ties – What connection could there be between a twenty year-old murder and a thirty year-old murder and a present day attack on Kyara’s mother? Did her grandmother falsely go to jail for twenty-years?

Split Seconds – Twins sisters meet for the first time as adults and soon discover that someone has gone to great lengths to keep them apart and will even kill to ensure that continues.

Please fill in the blank: Keep Calm and Go for it, make the leap, it’s so worth it.
