Outside is dangerous.
Such is the warning Koral has heard for twelve years. Born a product of genetic manipulation, he knows little else of the world beyond the steel walls of his home.
When fate gives him the choice between certain death and the unknown, there’s no question in what he must choose. But he’s about to find out the sands he must brave are full of more than mere monsters.
Providing the desert doesn’t kill him first.
This is a world ruled by instinct, where innocence is drowned in blood. Here, men are offered up to the great Serpent God, Lorric, only to emerge as the most feared killers on the planet: The Rogues.
With the god’s sights set on turning Koral into a legend, he must sacrifice himself to survive and be reborn as… The Rogue King

Shirain lifted her arms out towards the giant statue, the sound of her bracelets clacking together echoed across the ruins. ʺBehold our offering, Mighty Lord! Take his body as your own! Use him! Guide him in your ways so he may live to make you stronger!ʺ

The bowl slipped from his unfeeling hands to splash into the pond. Above, the statue’s eyes glowed a deep red. Behind him, Koral heard Shirain continue talking, her voice faint and muffled. His blood grew hot, desire filling his body and fogging his mind. What had she done to him?

ʺYour gift is pleasing, dear child.ʺ The words tumbled out of a mouth Koral could no longer control. ʺThis body is young. Barely a man.ʺ Someone else flexed his muscles. His lips twisted into a cruel grin as his tongue ran over his sharp teeth. ʺHe will need much training.ʺ

ʺMy Lord,ʺ Shirain purred, giving him a low bow. ʺOnce more, you honour me.ʺ

Awareness of another’s presence came crashing down on him, bringing with it an odd calmness. He knew little of magic or religion. Amelia’s teaching on the subject had been sparse; most of what he had learnt came from the camp and no one had mentioned possession. Would he win if he tried to banish the intruder? Was this not his body?

A rough laugh escaped his throat as he unwillingly turned from the statue and waded through the blood to dry land. ʺHe fights me.ʺ

ʺHe showed promise as a fighter,ʺ Shirain said, sounding strangely proud. ʺI hope he pleases my Lord and proves more interesting to break than the others.ʺ

ʺYes, this will be… enjoyable.ʺ Again, his lips pulled back into something that resembled a smile in name only. ʺBy the time I’ve finished with him, everyone shall fear the very name of him—the name of Vengeance.ʺ

Aldrea, Keep Calm and Answer These Twenty-Three Questions

  1. Do you consider yourself a logophile? If so, have you always been? If I consider the fact that when my fiancé and I started dating I was constantly having to explain some of the words I said, I guess I must be.
  2. What is your favorite color? Black! Which I guess is more an absence of colour…
  3. Where were you born? Where did you grow up? New Zealand! Oh, right, specifics … near the capital. I haven’t wandered all that far from there throughout my whole life.
  4. What is your favorite football team? … sports? Uh … I’m not up on sports, any sports.
  5. Who is your favorite author? So many … I’m going to have to do a joint first with Anne McCaffrey & Andre Norton.
  6. What is your favorite book? Apart from mine? That would be Dragonflight followed closely by The Year of the Unicorn.
  7. What do you do when you are not writing? Beyond the boring routine of housework? Gaming … or reading. Total geek over here.
  8. Do you have a day job as well? If you include mothering as a day job. It’s more of a 24/7 deal.
  9. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors? Backup, backup, for the love of all that’s holy and your sanity, backup! Put it on a USB or external HD, email it to yourself, leave it in a dropbox … anything! Just back that sucker up!
  10. Is being a writer a curse or a gift? That is a very good question and the answer, I believe, is dependent on the day.
  11. Where do you write? Mostly, in bed. At night, you understand, I’m not sitting there all day.
  12. Do you prefer silence or some noise while you write? Silence. Not that I get it all that often…
  13. What do you typically drink while writing? Pepsi Max. I love my caffeine, but hate coffee. Even the smell of it.
  14. What challenges have you had in regards to your writing life? Getting the quiet that I need to write more than a few sentences.
  15. When did you first start and when did you finish your book? I started it seventeen years ago and have been editing ever since. I finished in February this year.
  16. If your book is made into a movie, which actors/actresses do you envision playing the parts? If we’re talking voice actors: Gideon Emery for Veng & Keisha Castle-Hughes for Lasil. And, possibly, Claudia Black for Laccindy.
  17. What does your protagonist think of you? Would he/she want to hang out with you? Honestly, I think he views me with more than a touch of disdain and certainly wouldn’t “hang out” with me. Then again, I’m not sure I want to be around a giant lizardman for long anyway.
  18. What has been the toughest criticism so far? A lot of the negative words just run off like water off a duck’s back and the helpful stuff I might take a while to consider it as the words simmer in the background, but it’s not hard. The worst was being told my story wasn’t marketable.
  19. What has been the best compliment? Having several people who were avid non-fantasy readers like the small portion they read of my fantasy story. I’ll convert you all, I tell you!
  20. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? Come into my world of pure imagination… OMG, could you imagine if The Rogue King was real? For-get it!
  21. How did you come up with the title? Honestly, the story behind that is sort of lame. The protagonist is the Rogue King, see?
  22. Will there be a sequel? Yes, three of them. And a novella.
  23. What project are you working on now? Three stories right now: The Shadow Prince, which is the sequel to The Rogue King. Dark One’s Bride, the sequel to Dark One’s Mistress. And, lastly, a rewrite of Aelfah, which is a new story I’m hopping will stay a standalone.

Please fill in the blank: Keep Calm and Force Choke The Fool!
