Wintergirls- Laurie Halse Anderson

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.

“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.

I am that girl. I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through. I am the library aide who hides in Fantasy. I am the circus freak encased in beeswax.  I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame….I am contagious (24).

After 18-year-old Lia’s ex-best friend is found dead in a motel room, she’s overwrought with guilt. Cassie called her 33 times that night but Lia didn’t answer. Cassie died from complications of an eating disorder which Lia also suffers from. In fact, after Cassie’s death, Lia’s anorexia spins out of control, she cuts herself, and is haunted by vision of Cassie.

Wintergirls is a realistic portrayal of what it’s like to suffer from an eating disorder, or any disorder that confuses you into thinking that self harm is a way to gain control. When it comes down to it, teenagers don’t have much control of their lives. Lia can’t control the fact that her parents got divorced, that her father is remarried to a woman with a child, that her mother is a perfectionist, that her father is wrapped up with his new family, that her ex-best friend is dead… But Lia realizes there are things that she can control including her college major, her health, where she lives now that she’s eighteen, how hard she works in school, etc.  Lia must find the strength to forgive herself and realize life is worth living.

  2. This actually sounds like a book I’d really want to read. My best friend worked with anorexic/bulemic girls, and I worked with them as an RN in a pediatric hospital. After reading what the book is about, the phrase ‘the space between my thighs’ makes so much more sense.

Putting it on my wishlist now! Thanks Kristy.
