Keep Calm & Answer These 25 Questions: Devin Berglund

  1. Do you consider yourself a logophile? If so, have you always been? Yes, I am most definitely. Ever since I was little I’d filled countless notebooks and journals with many characters and plot ideas.
  2. What is your favorite color? Turquoise. The pretty blue-green color of the ocean that you see on vacation in the tropics.
  3. Where were you born? Where did you grow up? I was born in Fargo, North Dakota on a dark night in a blizzard and I grew up in the country outside a small Minnesotan town.
  4. What is your favorite football team? Well, I am actually not a football fan. haha… But, if I’d have to pick a team I’d probably pick the team with the coolest name or the awesomest (and I spelled it that way on purpose… hehe!) mascot.
  5. Who is your favorite author? My all-time favorite author is C.S. Lewis. He was amazing. This last year I found another Author I really like as well. Her name is Kate Morton. Check out her books!
  6. What is your favorite book? The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.
  7. What do you do when you are not writing? When I am not writing I am reading books & blogs, blogging, traveling, thinking, daydreaming, skyping my boyfriend, and playing with my puppy (Cocoa is a lab/shorthair collie mix. She is full on cutie.).
  8. Do you have a day job as well? Yep, I am a full-time writer. :)
  9. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors? YES. Keep writing and don’t stop until you have written “The End”.
  10. Is being a writer a curse or a gift? I think it’s both! I love being a writer, but then again I also hate sitting down to do the hard work.
  11. Where do you write? I usually write wherever I am. At my desk in my room or in a cafe. But then again, I may be writing in a far-away land where there are castles, pirates, and witches.
  12. Do you prefer silence or some noise while you write? It really depends. Once I was writing a book, and I had to have absolute silence in order to write it. Deep down inside, I wanted to be in a cabin up in the Rocky Mountains. I wanted silence, but would have been fine with hearing the wolves howling. On the other hand I know other times I’ve listened to music, while writing.
  13. What do you typically drink while writing? Pop, (Yep, I am from Minnesota!) Hot Cocoa, or Water with lemon, or tea.
  14. What challenges have you had in regards to your writing life? Sitting down and writing.
  15. When did you first start and when did you finish your book?  I wrote the second story first and the first one second. Kinda backwards, isn’t it? I always thought it was funny that C.S. Lewis did that too… with the Magician’s Nephew. The characters in the story, weren’t showing themselves to me as much, so I needed to search to find them… I found them more deeply in book one and finished it in November, 2012.
  16. If your book is made into a movie, which actors/actresses do you envision playing the parts? Hmm… I am not overly sure at the moment. There are a few that I could pick.
  17. What does your protagonist think of you? Would he/she want to hang out with you? Well, that depends which protagonist. My villain would probably hate me for everything I have put her through. I don’t think she would want to hang out with me, and I probably wouldn’t want to either for fear she would hurt me.
  18. How do you market your book? What avenues work best? Social Networking. I have had the best luck with my blog.
  19. What has been the toughest criticism so far? Hmm… I’m not sure.
  20. What has been the best compliment? There were many. :)
  21. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? My stories are in a fantasy world, but that doesn’t say there isn’t any truth in them. There are definitely real life experiences and inspiration from the real world that went into it.
  22. How did you come up with the title? It kind of came out of nowhere. But, the name stuck so well with the characters and the plot. :) Can’t give away much more than that! :)
  23. Will there be a sequel? Actually, it is the first of a trilogy.
  24. What project are you working on now? Revising and Editing “The Mason of Hearts” while plotting the next book.
  25. What question did I leave out that you’d like to answer? I am in a long distance relationship with a South African – Australian. We’ve been dating for 3 years. :) I met him in Australia, when I was studying abroad on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
