What Song (s) Would You Want to be Played at Your Funeral?

Funeral-Music

Maybe I’m just super dark and strange but I’ve thought a bit about this question and wonder if anyone else has too? I’ll be 33 on June 12, so maybe that’s why it’s been on my mind…

God forbid, if I die anytime soon, I’d want “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry played b/c the lyrics are hauntingly beautiful:

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love songUh oh, uh ohLord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother
She’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh,
And life ain’t always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain’t even grey, but she buries her babyThe sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had just enough timeIf I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had just enough time

And I’ll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I’m as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I’ve never known the lovin’ of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holdin’ my hand,
There’s a boy here in town, says he’ll love me forever,
Who would have thought forever could be severed by

The sharp knife of a short life, well,
I’ve had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I’ll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh, no, I’ll sell ’em for a dollar
They’re worth so much more after I’m a goner
And maybe then you’ll hear the words I been singin’
Funny when you’re dead how people start listenin’

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (oh, uh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep ’em in your pocket
Save ’em for a time when you’re really gonna need ’em, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I’ve had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I’ll wear my pearls.

  1. This is the song we played at my wife’s Celebration of Life, she picked it… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQoFLrZ5C3M They do an amazing job!!!

I have actually almost finish planning my personal Celebration of Life, and I am more than thankful for my wife having told me and having talked about it as much as we had, so that I could create what she wanted.

    • I forgot to add, it wasn’t even a month after my wife’s golden birthday (Nov 30th) that she died (Dec 28, 2012)… She was 30 years old.

      • I am so sorry for your loss. There aren’t any words.

I agree that its important to talk to your friends and family about sensitive subjects like this.

That’s a beautiful cover of the song, too, thanks for sharing!

        • It just shows, age really does not matter. Of course with my wife we knew, she had cancer.

Yeah, that cover song is one of my all time favorites, they do several other songs that are totally worth checking out as well! Especially if you are a music junkie like me, *grins*

  2. I want the gospel song I Fly Away played. I played it at my mom’s memorial service, too. I grew up listening to gospel music and have always loved that song.

  3. That is beautiful! I’m almost scared to say what I want…
‘Get in the Ring’ by Guns & Roses. Yeah, I know. But it just suits me, I guess. Never stop fighting and all.
