Divergent- Veronica Roth

One of my favorite quotes from Veronica Roth’s Divergent is: “I like to think I’m helping them by hating them. I’m reminding them that they aren’t God’s gift to humankind.” (Said by Christina, one of the Dauntless initiates).

In Roth’s dystopian world, people are grouped by factions which include the Abnegation (the selfless), the Amity (peace keepers), the Candor (people who are honest to a fault), the Dauntless (the fearless) and the Erudite (knowledge seekers).

Sixteen-year-old Beatrice “Tris” Prior was brought up in the Abnegation faction but she’s never felt that she truly belongs; therefore when her aptitude test shows that she’s a Divergent, (with equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite) she realizes that she can’t continue in her family’s faction. Well, technically she could, but she yearns for something more satisfying…like the Dauntless faction. Every decision creates consequences and for Tris that means cutting ties with her loving family and the quiet, peaceful community she grew up in. But it also brings Four, (a mysterious, good looking instructor) adrenaline filled adventures such as zip lining, jumping from moving trains, climbing a Ferris wheel, combat training…

Just when Tris embraces her new life in the Dauntless faction, one of the other power craved factions ignites a war, and Four, Tris, and Tris’s family are inadvertently the key players.

Divergent is fast-paced, unpredictable, and an amazing ride!
